To be honest, I don’t believe in New Year’s Resolutions. Not in the traditional sense.
I stopped making resolutions many years ago. Those promises to myself that I would exercise more, eat better, quit drinking coffee, or any other number of unrealistic expectations and restrictions that were fated to be unsuccessful by mid-January, February at the latest.
That being said, there is something about a brand New Year that just feels exciting. So full of opportunity and new beginnings, we all love a clean slate and a fresh start, don’t we? The first day of the week, the month, and definitely the year. A new moon. A birthday.
Humans seem to crave this idea of “starting over”. Maybe because in our daily lives we aren’t living to the potential we know we are capable of. We feel unfulfilled, stuck, disappointed, and therefore, a fresh start is an opportunity to step outside of our rut.
And nothing says brand new like a new calendar year.
I’ll admit it, I’m just as enamored by the promise of the new year as the next girl. And there is no shame in my love for the new year game. I embrace the sense of newness and possibility fully and completely.
However, I don’t make resolutions.
The main reason for this is because I don’t believe need to change my life. I love my life. I have made great strides in creating a life that is filled with joy, love, adventure, peace, and a plethora of other positive moments and emotions.
So I choose not to resolve to change a laundry list of things at the beginning of the year, I choose, instead to embrace being even MORE of who I am.
I don’t need the New Year, New Me mentality. I LOVE ME. If anything, it’s New Year, MORE of me. THIS ME. The Me that is present, awake, stepping into more of myself each and every day. The ME that loves deeply, cares fully and has embraced her passion for spreading Joy to anyone and everyone.
I don’t make resolutions, I make shifts happen. Daily. I don’t need a new year, I can make changes, big and small any day of the year. I can start a new routine on a Tuesday in March at 3PM.
It is never too late or too early to embrace WHO YOU ARE.
If the promise of a new year is the thing that gives you the inspiration to make these shifts, then I say embrace it. If making a resolution is what lights up the fire of living fully in your own self, then I applaud you and encourage you.
I just remind you that if you find yourself on January 5th, or 20th, or April 16th, realizing you’ve “failed” (and we’ll discuss that word in a minute)…you do NOT have to wait until a brand new year to get back on track. You don’t even have to wait another hour.
EVERY MOMENT is a new opportunity to RESOLVE to embrace your true self, your true purpose. EVERY. SINGLE. MOMENT.
And to touch quickly upon failure…the only failure is the decision to give up trying and doing. The rest are mere steps outside the path, and even those can sometimes lead to the most incredible successes.
So, if you must make resolutions, make New Moment resolutions. Resolve to live in the moment, and to embrace each moment as a new opportunity to find your JOY, to be alive, to see with fresh eyes.
And if all of that sounds like more than you can grasp on your own, you’re in luck, because it just so happens to be my specialty. I’d love to chat with you more about it.
